What to Expect

Starting psychiatric care can feel like a big step. My goal is to make the process clear, collaborative, and comfortable, beginning with a thorough initial evaluation and working together to develop a treatment plan that reflects your needs and goals.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST VISIT

After requesting an appointment, you’ll receive information about next steps and forms that need to be completed before your visit.

YOUR INITIAL EVALUATION

We’ll discuss your current concerns, history, and treatment goals. For children and adolescents, parents or caregivers are an important part of this process. At the end of the evaluation, recommendations can include medication, supportive psychotherapy, and lifestyle factors.

FOLLOW-UP CARE

Follow-up appointments provide time to assess how you’re doing, review the effectiveness of treatment, address new concerns, and make adjustments as needed. The frequency of visits will depend on your individual needs and treatment plan.

TELEHEALTH APPOINTMENTS

Appointments are provided via secure telehealth, allowing you to attend visits from a private location within Texas. You’ll need a reliable internet connection and a device with video and audio capabilities.

INSURANCE & PAYMENT

Sana Powell Psychiatry accepts select insurance plans and also offers self-pay options. Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, so I encourage you to verify your individual benefits before your first appointment. HSA and FSA funds may also be used for eligible services.

PRESCRIPTIONS & REFILLS

Please request medication refills at least four business days before you run out of medication to allow adequate time for requests to be reviewed. Medication changes and concerns that require clinical assessment are generally best addressed during an appointment.

BETWEEN VISITS

The secure patient portal is the preferred way to communicate about non-urgent clinical matters between appointments. Messages are reviewed during business hours and are intended for brief questions and administrative needs rather than concerns that require a full clinical assessment.

URGENT & EMERGENCY CARE

Sana Powell Psychiatry is an outpatient practice and does not provide emergency or 24-hour crisis services. If you are experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. If you are experiencing a mental health or suicide-related crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
